Understanding New Tax Advice Regulation – changes to quick phone calls

Australian tax advice regulation is changing 1 July, 2025. These changes aim to make the Australian tax industry more transparent and giving the community more confidence in tax practitioners.

Keeping clients informed

From 1 July 2025, accountants are now required to get a signed quote before doing work. This means we (Australian tax practitioners) must now get a signed quote before beginning any work for you.

It is aimed to enhance the professional and ethical standards expected from the community of accountants. This will be achieved by “improving transparency and accountability, providing greater confidence in the integrity of tax practitioners, and strengthening the tax system with stricter regulations”.

Going forward, if you call us for advice we will be required to back up any verbal advice in writing.

The Federal Government is clamping down on the industry ensuring every tax practitioner in Australia is doing the right thing. No more self-regulation.

It has always been our practice to keep you (our clients) informed of all relevant matters at to keep proper client records. We just need to add the extra step of obtaining a signed quote from you.

We’re committed to supporting you through this process of change. Please reach out to your Client Advisor if you have any questions or concerns.

Consequently, accountants are now required by law to properly document advice and any relevant background pertaining to the advice (facts, assumptions, and reasoning underpinning the advice).

Before beginning any work for you, we will send a quote through our electronic proposal software that you are able to sign electronically (or print + sign on paper if you prefer!).

Going forward, this means any quick phone call or email where you are seeking advice from your accountant, you will now be asked to sign a quote to confirm it’s existence.
We will also no longer be able to add you to certain portals or software applications without your prior written consent.

We understand this is a change to how we have done things, but it’s aimed to improve how Australian tax advice is provided and compliance in upheld.

If you are concerned or have any questions about the new tax advice regulation changes, please contact your advisor. We are happy to help answer your questions on our quest to make your life easier, however, we must also comply with the law.

Additionally, the Australian Aged Care sector is having a reform to fees July 1. Read about it in our detailed article here.
